Relationship
Depression

Those people
who aren’t in loving relationships are usually actively
looking for that special person to share their life with.
Few people choose to be alone. You want someone to be
there for you when things aren’t going well and to share
the joy when they are. The more common interests you
have, the more you can enjoy each others company.
Unfortunately, relationships don’t always end up being
what both persons imagined from the beginning. If
expectations aren’t met, then the relationship can be
further complicated by one person’s
depression.

Relationship
depression can occur when one person exercises a need to
completely control the other person. They tell them how
they should behave, what they should say, and how they
should dress. It usually starts gradually and then ends
up with one person being in complete control of the
other. Even though you may feel you know the other person
in the relationship well, everyone has a tendency to hide
things about themselves that they don’t want the other
person to know.
The person
who is on the receiving end of a dominating relationship
can experience a strong lack of confidence, feelings of
no self-worth, and depression. They may get to the point
that they no longer feel worthy of the other person and
feel that no one else would ever want them. They may
suffer depression due to the controlling relationship or
the dominance may only complicate the depression that
already exists.
If you are in
a relationship with someone who is suffering depression,
there are some things you have to accept. First of all,
don’t expect them to just “snap out of it” when they are
feeling depressed. They have no control over their
feelings and they don’t have a switch that they can flip
on or off. There’s nothing they can do to change the way
they feel and there’s nothing you can do,
either.
You also have
to get over the need to rescue the other person. Your
natural tendencies to comfort them and make their worries
go away are hard to ignore. Realistically, things are not
always going to be all right. There are bad days that you
can’t do anything about. You can’t rescue another person
from depression. As hard as it may be, you may not be
able to do anything at all.
One of the
biggest problems with relationship depression is that so
many people don’t believe that depression is a real
illness. In fact, it is one of the most common illnesses
in the United States. Depression affects every aspect of
a person’s life and can contribute towards breaking up
couples that aren’t able to cope with the symptoms.
Enduring the problems of a relationship with an
individual suffering from depression can have a domino
effect. A resulting breakup can be even worse. Every
fight, every upset, and certainly every breakup is bound
to lead to more depression.

There are
types of depression which are present no matter what is
going on in a person’s life and the type that is the
result of an event or specific circumstances. When a
person has the former type of depression, the latter will
only increase the symptoms. If you have a relationship
with someone who is suffering from depression, persuading
them to get professional help is the best chance you have
for a somewhat normal
relationship.
